In the field of bloodstain pattern analysis, drip stains, drip trails, and drip patterns refer to bloodstains or bloodstain patterns where the predominant action causing these stains is the formation of a falling blood drop or drops due to gravity. This chapter assists bloodstain pattern analysts with the interpretation of drip stains and drip patterns by detailing the common features expected to be observed in such stains and patterns as well as the behavior of the blood during their formation. The various factors that can influence the stain and pattern characteristics is also described. Limitations with regard to the classification of drip stains and drip patterns using the current classification systems are also discussed along with possible scenarios where classification may become difficult.
